“...one sees differently with color photography than black-and-white... in short, visualization must be modified by the specific nature of the equipment and materials being used.” —Ansel Adams

Workshop overview:
This workshop closely follows the content of my most popular workshop, The Fine Digital Print, which translates traditional photographic practices into new digital techniques, but it gives it a more specific focus - black and white imagery. What we cover on this topic quickly in The Fine Digital Print, we go into in great detail in Black and White Mastery.
To make the best black and white image today a digital photographer's standard practice needs to be revised entirely starting with making exposures in color and converting them to neutral images, enhancing them with unbelievably precise curve control, going further with digital masking's extraordinary possibilities, and finally choosing between an enormous array of print media from traditional materials, such as silver gelatin, to inkjet prints capable of producing the blackest blacks of any available media and being toned limitlessly.

With these techniques you'll learn a new way of seeing, which will open up a world of possibilities for you when you go to make exposures.

View original masterworks:
One of the best ways to learn how to make better prints is to expose yourself to great masterworks. You'll develop an eye for the aethetics of photographic printmaking. You'll become sensitized to the many nuances that add up to make a great print.

During my workshops you'll see original master works from the history of photography including original prints by Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Paul Caponigro, Linda Connor, Kurt Markus, Arnold Newman, Olivia Parker, Chris Rainier, Jock Sturges, Joyce Tenneson, George Tice, Jerry Uelsmann, Brett Weston, Minor White, Huntington Witherill, and many more.
This workshop is right for you if:
You want to achieve ultimate control in making black and white images.
Workshop requirements:
A basic comfort level with Photoshop is required for all of John Paul's sessions.
