“Know what the old masters did. Know how they composed their pictures, but do not fall into the conventions they established. These conventions were right for them, and they are wonderful. They made their language. You make yours. They can help you. All the past can help you.” – Robert Henri

Workshop overview:

The Fine Digital Print workshop series offers the most advanced digital printing workshops available anywhere. You'll learn more in one week than you learn in a semester in college.

The Fine Digital Print Master is a true master class, conducted by a master, at an elevated level.

Reviews set the stage for customized projects, collaboration, and extensive feedback. We’ll identify core strengths, areas for further development, and design focused experiments to get the answers you need to resolve your work at the highest level.

Demonstrations of advanced material are conducted seminar style. Sessions illuminate not only how to use the tools optimally, but also identify strategies for applying them to achieve the results you want. You then apply these new techniques customizing them for your own images, making them your own.

You'll test a variety of media with your images to determine which is optimum for your images/vision. You’ll test a variety of palettes with your favorite image(s) to clarify and refine your personal palette. You’ll test a variety of sharpening styles. You’ll test a variety of scales. And you'll get valuable feedback while you explore your options that will accelerate your progress.

You'll be excited and inspired by the diverse perspectives of your fellow participants. Collaborative sessions reveal how uniquely interpretive each realization of an image can be. You'll find hidden dimensions in your images and your visual voice that you didn't know were there before.

You’ll leave with a clear understanding of the core strengths of your vision, an action plan for finishing your personal project designed to take your work to the next level, and several exhibition quality prints.

Schedule

This curriculum is customized for the participants involved. Every week is unique.

Class size is small and enrollment is extremely selective.

Review sessions will give you useful feedback, which will continue throughout the week.

Brainstorming sessions will generate a multitude of ideas for your work.

The workshop is highly collaborative and totally hands on. You’ll learn through example and application.

You’ll see John Paul develop one of his images from start to finish, discussing why he’s doing what he’s doing every step of the way.

John Paul will process your files live before the rest of the group discussing why he’s making the moves he’s making.

Participants will process your files in quick breakout sessions designed to give you more useful feedback relevant to your work.

You'll be excited and inspired by the diverse perspectives of your fellow participants. Collaborative sessions reveal how uniquely interpretive each realization of an image can be. You'll compare multiple versions of your images generated by you and others as you search for your own ideal solutions. You'll find hidden dimensions in your images and your visual voice that you didn't know were there before or possible.

Technique is presented strategically rather than formulaically at a high level while resolving participant work in progress.

There's more information in these items than we can cover in a week so you'll find them to be invaluable resources long after the workshop ends.

This workshop has a strong photographic perspective but is applicable to all types of artists who want to reproduce their work in digital media.

View original masterworks:

One of the best ways to learn how to make better prints is to expose yourself to great masterworks. You'll develop an eye for the aethetics of photographic printmaking. You'll become sensitized to the many nuances that add up to make a great print.

During my workshops you'll see original master works from the history of photography including original prints by Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock, Paul Caponigro, Linda Connor, Kurt Markus, Arnold Newman, Olivia Parker, Chris Rainier, Joyce Tenneson, George Tice, Jerry Uelsmann, Brett Weston, Minor White, Huntington Witherill, and many more.

This workshop is right for you if:

You're very comfortable with digital workflow and printmaking, you want to take your skills to the next level, and most importantly you want to strengthen your personal vision and get feedback on a personal project while you develop it.

This is an advanced workshop. You're ready for this workshop, if you've taken the Fine Digital Print II. If you haven’t taken the Fine Digital Print II you must contact us to help us determine if you’re ready. You should be very comfortable with the techniques listed in the schedule for The Fine Digital Print I and II. We'll discuss the finer points of that material when appropriate. This knowledge base will be assumed as we solve challenges strategically rather than formulaically to advance the realization of your unique vision.

Bring one (or more) body of work you want to refine and advance.

Reviews:

This week starts with half hour reviews of your work. You’ll get valuable feedback from the group on your images, define the core strengths of your vision, and create a roadmap for actions to take to make your work stronger. The content covered and collaborative exercises performed during the rest of the week will give you strategies and ideas to help you get there. You’ll get feedback on your work every step of the way.

Participant Experiences:

"John Paul is one of the best instructors, if not the best, that I have ever had. He is a great source of inspiration. That's saying something! I studied with Richard Feynman."—Steve Schele
