The Spell of the Sensuous: The Fluid Nature of Perception, featuring the photography of John Paul Caponigro and Joyce Tenneson, opens at YJ Contemporary Fine Art on Thursday, July 25th.  The exhibition celebrates the works of two of the nation’s foremost photographers known for their ability to create images that are poetic, evocative and mystical.   The exhibition will present iconic examples of Joyce Tenneson’s portfolio of work- including images from her figurative portraiture series, her “Intimacy” series, and images featured in her 2012 book “Trees and the Alchemy of Light”– alongside works by fine art environmental photographer John Paul Caponigro – including images from his Alignment, Exhalation, and Illumination series. A review of the exhibition is featured in the July/August issue of Art New England magazine.
The artists will give a gallery talk on Thursday, July 25th at 3pm to discuss their creative process and photographic style.  The talk is free and open to the public but requires advance registration. (Register here)  An opening reception will follow from 6-8pm that evening.
The exhibition at YJ Contemporary Fine Art runs through September 5th.

Melt Down, features stunning photographs and videos by ten distinguished Maine artists whose work addresses climate change in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. “Melt Down” has been organized by CMCA curator emeritus Bruce Brown, and includes the work of artists John Paul CaponigroJohn EideElla HudsonJonathan LaurenceJustin LevesqueJim NickelsonJan PiribeckPeter RalstonShoshannah White, and Deanna Witman.
Through their experiences recording and responding to the visible and visceral markers of irrefutable change in the Polar Regions, the artists in “Melt Down” bring these physically remote places and the compelling need for action to a wider audience. Alumni Beal & Hartford Collaborate On Big Successes

April_Kathy_02

This summer, two of John Paul Caponigro’s Next Step AlumniKathy Beal  and April Hartford completed cornerstone projects in Santa Fe, and their success was enhanced by their support of each other.

The second week in June, Kathy Beal debuted her new active wear line, “Embodywear Fashions – Fit For Your Inner Goddess”, on the runways of Santa Fe Fashion Week. Her assistant for the event – April Hartford. Kathy reflected “it was getting close to show time, and I’d been so focused on getting the

Kathy reflected “it was getting close to show time, and I’d been so focused on getting the new product in and the website launched, that I neglected to look for an assistant to help me out during the three-day show. So I sent a last minute text to April, and she replied almost immediately – absolutely, I’ll be there! Really, I couldn’t have pulled it off without her help.” One benefit for April – she got to be one of the first to try on Kathy’s new fashions! Here

In mid-July, April Hartford was busy preparing for her opening “Transgender, One Person’s Journey” an exhibition of not only her incredible photographs portraying her journey, but some of the best educational materials available today for the transgender community. Shortly before her opening, she went to Kathy’s studio to put together a few outfits to wear during the exhibition and Embodywear Fashions quickly became a sponsor for April’s exhibit.

April shared, “Kathy has been instrumental in both feedback of my images and exhibition set up. One issue I face with such a personal story being laid out for all to see is a sense of protection. Wearing outfits designed by such a special friend helps ground me when at my studio. Though our work is so different, we come together through shared experiences and friends helping each other move past any obstacles or stumbling blocks in our paths.”

Come have an adventure in art! Be among the first to see new works by artist John Paul Caponigro’s series Alignment, featuring petroglyphs and stone alignments. Inspired by early childhood and continuing encounters with the sacred arts of “primitive” or “primal” cultures these images make visible the inner spirit of extraordinary places around the world as diverse as Antarctica, Iceland, and Japan. Environmental art in virtual space, these altered images are land art produced without altering the land. The artist’s visionary landscapes drawn from and for the mind’s eye heighten our physical, emotional and spiritual connections to nature. He has said, “The process of creating these images is like dreaming while I’m awake.” Now you’re invited to come dream together with the artist in this unique exhibit.
This is a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of an artist at work in his private studio. Many of the items on display have never been seen before; some are not made public, except during this event.
In addition to the state-of-the art digital photographs, also on display are a wide variety of related studies some drawn, some painted, and some computer rendered.
A second exhibit is also on display featuring the artist’s works made in Maine, his home for over 28 years.
