Lying just outside the Amazon Basin, the region has a\u00a0regular rainy season at\u00a0the beginning of the year. The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: fresh water collects in the valleys between sand dunes and is prevented from percolating down by a layer of impermeable rock underneath the sand. The result\u00a0is a vast network of\u00a0blue, green, and black lagoons surrounded by white sands and bordered\u00a0by a river and an ocean. Now imagine the magical transformations in color it will undergo\u00a0during\u00a0sunrise and sunset. We\u2019ll explore these stunning dune fields and waterways\u00a0extensively on\u00a0foot, by 4 wheel drive, and by boat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>Airplane flights are optional.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-40010\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johnpaulcaponigro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Iguazu2_425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"283\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Iguazu Falls<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Iguazu Falls are some of the world\u2019s most famous and extensive. Iguazu (Big Water) is located on the border of Brazil and Argentina where the Iguazu River tumbles over the edge of the Paran\u00e1 Plateau.\u00a0Numerous islands along the 2.7 km\u00a0long edge divide the falls into many separate waterfalls and cataracts, varying between 60-82 m high. The number of these smaller waterfalls fluctuates from 150 to 300, depending on the current water level. The surrounding subtropical forests are overflowing with\u00a0wildlife and home to\u00a0more than 160 bird species.
