Inspired by Gutai action painters during her time in Japan\u2014artists that famously threw mediums like paint or clay at canvases in post-war Japan\u2014Heather creates life-size, symmetrical drawings capturing dance permanently on canvas. \u201cI work to refine my kinetic drawing to something graphically and intentionally essential,\u201d Hansen explains as we lounge in the backyard of her New Orleans home in the Marigny. \u201cCharcoal allows me to record each gesture as it\u2019s happening. You can see the story.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u201cDance has been a little overlooked in the arts, in part because it\u2019s a little bit ephemeral,\u201d she points out. \u201cMusic is too but it\u2019s different<b>, <\/b>you can keep a tune in your head. With dance, people usually say, \u2018Oh that was beautiful or that really made me feel something.\u2019 They don\u2019t remember the movements. They don\u2019t have anchors for it.
