\nRobert Eckhardt has been a member for 1 year. Here are his insights.
\nAlumni Insight<\/strong>
\n(NSS) It seemed innocent enough at the time. I was attending my first
\nworkshop with John Paul, who repeatedly urged everyone to reconsider
\n(i.e., break) entrenched habits, thinking, and ways of seeing. At one
\npoint, expanding upon the list \u201crules\u201d we might choose to violate,
\nJohn Paul suggested that we take our cameras off our tripods and
\nintentionally move them as we pressed the shutter. I found this idea
\nrather provocative, tried a few shots, and, after reviewing my handful
\nof failures, quickly abandoned the effort. But when I got home I
\ncouldn’t get the idea out of my head. For some reason, I took this
\nparticular idea as a personal challenge, a puzzle to be solved.
\nEventually, after weeks of trial and error, I solved the puzzle, and
\nthe resulting photographs became the series I now call \u201cmotion |
\npictures\u201d. That series has become the primary focus of my current
\nphotographic work.
\nAbout a year later, while discussing some \u201cmotion | picture\u201d images, I
\nconfessed that I found photographing trees almost irresistible and
\nfelt that I should make a greater effort to broaden my horizons. John
\nPaul challenged me to find ways to photograph subjects that I thought
\nwere impossible with this technique. And I have (stay tuned). Then he
\nsaid, \u201cBut don’t stop photographing trees.\u201d And I haven’t.

\nBiography<\/strong>
\n(BIO) Robert Eckhardt is a 19th century photography dealer and 21st
\ncentury fine art photographer. Originally trained as an avian
\necologist, his past careers include assistant professor of vertebrate
\nbiology at the University of Maine, editor at Simon & Schuster,
\ncomputer book author, and contributing editor of Macworld magazine.
\nRobert started photographing in his teens, but put his cameras away
\n(for good, he thought) some 25 years ago. The convergence of
\ncomputers, cameras, and digital imagery prompted him to start
\nphotographing again in 2003. In addition to John Paul Caponigro, he
\nhas studied with Carl Chiarenza, Christopher James, and Michael Frye.
\nHe has recently been an assistant instructor for workshops at the
\nAnsel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park. His images were chosen
\nfor three juried group shows in 2009; he has a solo exhibit scheduled
\nfor 2010 at the Kelly Street Gallery in Half Moon Bay, CA.
\nRobert’s current photographic interests include panoramas, night
\nphotography, and cheap plastic (aka toy) lenses. Bu he is particularly
\ndrawn to the way motion and slow shutter speeds combine to create
\nlandscapes invisible to the naked eye: arcs of stars in the night sky;
\nphantom contours of wind-blown leaves; streaks of rushing water. The
\nphotographs in this exhibit are taken from the series called motion|
\npictures. In that series, Robert takes the standard long-exposure
\nformula \u2013 motionless camera and moving subject \u2013 and stands it on its
\nhead. By moving the camera and its open shutter through a (usually)
\nstationary landscape, he creates images of an unseen world.\u00a0 A world
\nwhere motion turns into a vision of tranquility.\u00a0 A world where,
\nsomehow, movement creates a sort of stillness, a serenity we often
\nfeel but normally cannot see. It’s a world that retains its mystery no
\nmatter how frequently he returns to it.\u00a0 A world that reveals itself
\nonly on its terms, often in just one startling frame out of a humdrum
\nof hundreds. Like a half-forgotten memory, it’s a world where details
\nare lost and what remains is only an essence, or perhaps just a dream.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
