Come have an adventure in art! Be among the first to see new works by artist John Paul Caponigro’s series Alignment, featuring petroglyphs and stone alignments. Inspired by early childhood and continuing encounters with the sacred arts of “primitive” or “primal” cultures these images make visible the inner spirit of extraordinary places around the world as diverse as Antarctica, Iceland, and Japan. Environmental art in virtual space, these altered images are land art produced without altering the land. The artist’s visionary landscapes drawn from and for the mind’s eye heighten our physical, emotional and spiritual connections to nature. He has said, “The process of creating these images is like dreaming while I’m awake.” Now you’re invited to come dream together with the artist in this unique exhibit.
This is a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of an artist at work in his private studio. Many of the items on display have never been seen before; some are not made public, except during this event.
In addition to the state-of-the art digital photographs, also on display are a wide variety of related studies some drawn, some painted, and some computer rendered.
A second exhibit is also on display featuring the artist’s works made in Maine, his home for over 28 years.

You're Invited ! – Annual Open Studio Exhibit – 7/31-8/1

cae2010
You’re invited! Come visit my annual open studio event July 31 – August 1 from 10-5. Gallery talks are at 2.
It’s been one of my most prolific years to date. Producing more than one hundred new images, four bodies of work, in progress for ten years, have been brought to completion. The results are surprising, even for me.
Three new books featuring this work have been released – Reflection, Condensation, and Correspondence – which you can preview and purchase online.
Also on hand will be my playful iPhone photo sketches, some of which are featured in my column on the Huffington Post. I’ll even take, process, and transmit some during my daily artist’s talks at 2 pm.
Come enjoy prints, books, web galleries, performances and conversations during this very special event.

Exhibit – New Work / Annual Open Studio

You’re invited! My Annual Open Studio Exhibit (in my gallery/studio in Cushing, Maine) of New Work from 2008 is open for one weekend only – August 2-3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I’ll discuss my work daily at 2 p.m, sign books at 3 p.m, and post content online at 6 p.m. This is the best time to see and purchase new work as introductory prices are available for a limited time only. (Thereafter, private viewings for print purchases will scheduled by appointment only.)
This summer’s event simultaneously presents two galleries of work – one highlighting bold color and the other highlighting drawn forms. These new images are my most painterly to date. Upstairs, bright, bold colors exude a lush sensuality, producing an almost physical sensation while evoking strong emotional responses. These new additions to several of my most popular series simply glow. Downstairs, spaciously atmospheric compositions are filled with subtle iridescent whites, grays, and blacks. New work from the series Refraction reveals an evolution in my recent explorations into incorporating drawn elements with photographs.  If photographs are light drawings, these are also drawings of light. Simultaneously representational and abstract, this daring new work contains a powerful energy that transports the viewer.
During the exhibition, video documenting my recent related explorations with environmental performance art can be seen in the studio and here on this blog.
And don’t forget to see the Two Generations (father and son) exhibit at the Maine Media Workshops.
You can see two exhibits in one day!
