ICC Is A Scale
March 20, 2009 | Leave a Comment

During the Epson Print Academy Andrew Rodney uses many great metaphors to explain a complex subject – color managment. Here’s one. The ICC standard is just a scale that gives numbers a context and ultimately a meaning. 1500! What’s 1500? 1500 what? Meters? Kilometers? The scale gives the number meaning and ultimately use. And using a common scale that we all share makes communication easier and more precise. Color management is ultimately all about scientifically describing and communicating color.

Lightroom & Photoshop
March 14, 2009 | 2 Comments

During the Epson Print Academy today, Jeff Schewe does a great job detailing how to set up an optimum relationship between Lightroom and Photoshop.
Use LR (or ACR) for parametric edits.
Use Photoshop for processing pixels.
The lion’s share of image processing happens during Raw conversion,
So, what kinds of things should you favor doing in Photoshop?
Here’s Schewe’s list.
Retouching

Download the Photoshop World PDF for a complete run down.
This conference is first rate. Over 40 top notch instructors present non-stop digital seminars for three full days and nights. The staff is super-friendly. There’s a tremendous sense of community everyone attending can participate in.
What they claim is true. “No other conference offers as much training as Photoshop World! Most conferences are just large trade exhibitions with a few panels, forums and classes sprinkled in. Photoshop World is almost the exact opposite. We concentrate on giving you training, training, and more training. Then, we couple that with an impressively sized expo with even MORE training sessions, and throw in a bunch of fun after-hour activities for good measure. There really is nothing quite like it anywhere else!”
I’m scheduled for four events.
Precon – Epson Print Academy – Tuesday March 24 from 1-5 pm.
Panel – The Fine Art of Digital – Thursday, March 26 from 7-9 pm.
Seminar – The Fine Digital Print – Friday March 27 from 11 am -12 pm.
Seminar Drawing With Light – Friday March 27 from 1-2 pm.
NAPP members get special discounts – up to $100 off.
If you’re not a member and you plan on attending become a member.
It’s even better than getting a free membership.
Photoshop World alumni get even steeper discounts – over $100 off.
Kelby Training subscribers get an extra $50 off.
Register early (by February 20, 2009) for Photoshop World and save an extra $100.
Epson Print Academy – Larry Kaufmann

The videos in the Epson Print Academy are packed with information. Epson’s Larry Kauffmann, a source with over a decade of direct real world insider experience, quickly dispels many myths and provides clear information.
Here’s one tip. Epson printers provide both USB2 and Ethernet. Both are fast enough for the highest quality printing. USB2 has length limitations, so it’s used when printing from a computer near a printer. Ethernet is used to print over longer distances.
As an aside, fast data transfer prevents banding. If you encounter banding check a few things. Check head alignment. Check the cable delivering the data – type and length. Check to see that the computer spooling the data isn’t taxed performing other functions.

Epson Print Academy – Live – What It’s Like
November 16, 2008 | Comments Off

Today, the Epson Print Academy is in Washington DC at the Hilton Crystal Palace.
What’s the Epson Print Academy like? Jack Reznicki hosts Track One. Jeff Schewe is ring leader for Andrew Rodney, Greg Gorman, Mac Holbert, and me in Track Two. Both tracks feature live sessions and informative videos. In track two senior product manager Mark Radogna (below) talks about the new HDR ink technologies. Henry Wilhelm talks about key issues in print permanence – see the full length here. There’s an Expo area. Jeff Greene of Microsoft makes a short presentation on Capture One 4 and Expression Media 2. Mike Wong of On One makes a short presentation on their plug-ins like Mask Pro and Focal Point. And there’s a Gallery; all the prints are printed with Epson’s new HDR ink.
Check back later this evening for afternoon additions.

Epson Print Academy – Wilhelm / Reichmann
November 9, 2008 | Leave a Comment

The videos for the Epson Print Academy are always rich. In the newly updated Track 2 sessions attendees get to see a 14 minute short cut of Michael Reichmann (Luminous Landscape) interviewing Henry Wilhelm (Care and Permanence of Photographs) on longevity. A lot of myths and misnomers are dispelled. It’s well worth scanning.
You can see and/or listen to the full 68 minute version here.
